40 Under 40

InvestmentNews is reaching out to readers and the financial planning industry at large to nominate top financial advisers and associated professionals under age 40.

Your nominee for our fourth annual 40 Under 40 project should exhibit identifiable accomplishment at a young age as well as promising future prospects. He or she should also be under the age of 40 on June 19, which is when we will publish our list.

The nominees will be considered by editorial staff based on the following criteria:

  • Accomplishment (success in business, projects, the wider world in an advisory capacity, etc.)

  • Contribution (promotion of the profession, financial literacy, pro-bono financial planning work, etc.)

  • Leadership (within a company, the industry, etc.)

  • Promise (passion, enthusiasm, ideas, etc.)

Please submit your favorite young adviser or other significant influencer in the financial planning industry (e.g., academics, consultants) by March 31, 2017, after which the nomination process will end and no further submissions will be considered. The nominees will be vetted by the InvestmentNews editorial team for inclusion in a special report publishing June 19, 2017.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is InvestmentNews’ 40 Under 40?

A list of 40 people who have achieved notable success in the financial advisory business before turning 40.

How can I nominate someone for 40 Under 40?

Nominations must be submitted using the web form.

Can I nominate people who aren’t financial advisers?

Yes, as long as the majority of their work is with and for the financial advisory industry. Examples might be financial planning professors, financial-adviser-focused practice management consultants, etc.

When does the nomination process end?

March 31. No nominations will be taken after that date.

When will the winners be notified?

During the month of April.

When will 40 Under 40 be published?

In the June 19 issue, with additional online components around that date.

How will the nominees be judged? Who will choose the final 40?

The four criteria — accomplishment, contribution, leadership and promise — are listed with some examples/clarification on the project’s description. InvestmentNews staff will judge nominees based on the four criteria and will aim to assemble a diverse group that represents a broad spectrum of the financial advice business.

How many people can I nominate?

There is no limit.

What if the nominee turns 40 this year?

As long as the nominee isn’t yet 40 as of the date of publication, June 19, they qualify. If the person turns 40 before or on June 19, 2017, they do not qualify.

Do I have to include the nominee’s assets under management?

Yes. If the nominee is picked, the profile we write will mention the assets under management. If the nominee is not an adviser, please choose “not applicable” from the dropdown menu.

Can I just call you or send you an email with the name of the person I would like to nominate?

No. Only those nominated through the web form will transfer into the database.

I want to nominate someone, but can I remain anonymous?

No, we need to know who you are, though we don’t share nominator information with any third parties.

Are there rules about whom I can nominate?

You can nominate yourself, a client, a family member, your boss, an employee or an acquaintance. The most important thing is that you state a clear reason for the nomination based on the four criteria.

Will more than one nominee from the same company be accepted?

You can nominate multiple people from one company, but because of the publication’s goal of finding a diverse group, only one would likely be chosen. However, multiple candidates from separate divisions of large conglomerates could be chosen.

What is required of those who are selected?

Candidates who are selected must make themselves available for a phone interview with a reporter. They also will need to provide a high-resolution photograph and fill out a survey. They may be asked to sit for a photo shoot or a video interview. They will be invited to a luncheon at the InvestmentNews headquarters in New York, but need not agree to attend to be considered.

Can I contact you to see how my nominee is doing in the judging process?

No. We don’t give status reports. If we need any further information, we will contact you. Please be patient.

I want to be picked for 40 Under 40. Will it help to hire a public relations firm?

No. A PR firm would not influence the judging.
